The "X" Handstamp Varieties

Striped Red 24mm - 1847

BINGHAMTON/SEP/27/N.Y. 31mm Red CDS; "B" close to "N"; Striped red 24mm "X".  This is a 
                       previously unreported type of "X" stampless marking from Binghamton.
                       This is also the earliest reported usage of any type of "X" marking from
                       Binghamton, preceding the 25mm hollow "X" (seen below) by more than ten months.
                       Rate for over 300 miles, per Act of March 3, 1845.

Hollow Red 25mm - 1848

BINGHAMTON/AUG/11/N.Y. 31mm Red CDS; "B" close to "N"; Hollow red 25mm "X".  This is the 
                       earliest reported use of this type of "X" stampless marking from
                       Binghamton, as noted by Chester Wilcox.
                       Rate for over 300 miles, per Act of March 3, 1845.

Hollow Red 25mm - 1848

BINGHAMTON/SEP/14/N.Y. 31mm Red CDS; "B" close to "N"; Hollow red 25mm "X".  This is a 
                       latest reported use of this type of "X" stampless marking from
                       Binghamton.  This is a newly reported date of use for this marking.
                       Rate for over 300 miles, per Act of March 3, 1845.

Solid Red 18mm - 1850's

BINGHAMTON/26/SEP/N.Y. 31mm Red CDS; "B" close to "N"; Red 18mm solid X.
                       Single rate for over 300 miles, per Act of March 3, 1845.
                       Earliest reported by Wilcox for this variety of solid X.
