The Binghamton Post Office was established May 29, 1830. Previous to that, it was known as Chenango Point. The first postmaster of Binghamton was Virgil Whitney. The Binghamton Post Office continues operating today with a Zip Code of 13902.

ALBANY/FEB/22 Red CDS of Albany, NY. Letter mailed in Albany by Virgil Whitney, Postmaster of Binghamton. Postmasters could send mail for free from any post office. Letter discusses Canal business brought before the New York Senate in session in Albany. Whitney was evidently in Albany monitoring progress of legislation important to himself and the recipient.
